Fish
There are more than 1,500 types of species of fish found within the Great Barrier Reef, so no matter where you are snorkelling, you’ll see at least a few varieties. The fish of the Great Barrier Reef range in colours, shapes, and sizes, all with their behaviours and habitats. Simply floating at the top of the ocean and gazing down will let you see the dozens of fish on display. Otherwise, you can opt to scuba dive the region and get up close and personal with the fish that hang out on the ocean’s floor. Meet the friendly parrotfish, which are so friendly they’ll come right up to you for a visit, or the mysterious clownfish, made famous by the movie ‘Finding Nemo’ as its darts in and out of the coral nearby.
Molluscs
If you think there is a lot of fish in the Great Barrier Reef, you’ll be in for a shock in regards to Molluscs, with more than 4,000 species found throughout the region. These creatures are a bit tougher to spot while exploring, species like the Worm, Sea Cucumber, and the Blue Seaslug all favourites, which need a sharp eye to be seen. Found on the seafloor, these long shaped species are truly fascinating to see in person, each with their own unique and quirky body that is so unlike our own.
Sea Turtles
Undoubtedly one of the most amazing creatures to be found within the region, the Sea turtles of the Great Barrier Reef are ancient. Being hundreds of years old, these creatures glide through the water without a care, slowly swimming by in the hunt of food or some quiet. Turtle spottings aren’t very common in some areas, so seeing one in person can truly make your holiday!
Dolphins
The friendliest animals of the sea, the dolphins can be found hopping alongside boats, in the deep ocean regions, or even in the shallow shores of the area’s islands. Each region of the reef has its own pods of dolphins, with even a couple area’s offering dolphin feeding!
