Adelaide Central Market |
Close to top wine regions including the Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale, Adelaide is a top holiday destination for food and wine lovers. But you don’t even need to leave the city to experience the delicious local produce found in the region. Spend a morning exploring the Adelaide Central Market to discover why this area is famed for its food.
History
The Adelaide Central Market was originally started back in 1869 by a group of traders who were unhappy with the conditions at the existing market at East End. The City Market, as it was known then, was officially opened in 1870 housing up to 100 stalls offering fresh produce. The market continues in the same location today, despite suffering fires in 1925 and 1977.
These days Adelaide Central Market is South Australia’s most visited attraction, with 9 million people wandering its stalls every year in search of the best local produce and international cuisine. The Adelaide Central Market hosts nearly 80 market stalls selling fresh produce, bakery and delicatessen goods and more.
